Wonderful. Inspired and inspiring. I see our Catholic faith a bit differently, with a greater emphasis on the humanity and mercy of Christ as a reflection of God’s power. Christ’s love for us is best seen in the sincere care and compassion he showed us. He didn’t question our habits of consumption or refer to the weakness of our will as moral failing but rather as understandable, more due to the failures of leadership, and evidence of our need for the healing that comes from Christ, by the grace of God. Examples of leadership failures Jesus pointed out and which were also noted by the prophets were not that they were too lenient toward the flock, not that they demanded too little, nor that they were frugality enough so as to force people to seek virtue by putting economic and social pressure on them. Instead, it was leadership’s lack of mercy, their condemnation of people for being “irresponsible” with their money, for condemning and denigrating socializing and drinking wine, for turning their noses up to those they saw as failing to be productive enough and in the right way. They had contempt for those they and the nations had failed but rather than meeting them where they were at, the kept them at a social and economic distance, ostracizing people as “sinners,” blaming them for their failings and defining them by those failings, and seeing any offer of generosity not as trusting in God and the goodness of his creation, but rather as behavior that can only work to enable sin.
This is a common mindset among spiritual and intellectual elites alike, and always has been, more so as being so becomes more convenient. The harder it is to be generous, the easier it is to justify miserliness. Yes, God seems to demand from us what’s counterintuitive. It’s precisely when something is hardest that God is likely calling us to do it. This is because in such times, the worldly way appears as the holy way so easily, it has all the superficial elements of holiness, like practical virtue and plentiful historical examples, but lacking a key aspect—the love and mercy of God—we risk trusting the manmade over trusting in God’s goodness goodness and power.
Being a complete failure in piety myself, it’s hard to say another person’s perspective might be in error or suggest I might have a more true view. How could I better interpret Christ’s message and Church teaching better than someone so educated and virtuous, who serve the public through hard work and self-sacrifice? Yet, we know by scripture that this is not impossible.
We will see how Mr. Vance’s interpretation of Catholic teaching does as its gradually implemented in society via the project 2025 inspired Big Beautiful Bill, which Mr. Vance must see as being in agreement with his understanding of what Christian leadership looks like in action. The true nature of this plan he’s promoting and enthusiastically helping to carry out will be revealed by its fruit, and perhaps be vindicated, and perhaps not. One thing seems certain, change is needed, on that no one will disagree, but as no one knows what kind of change, this is a time for social experimentation on a grand scale, and the only reasonable response to have hope and patience.
